To me the Declaration of Independence and Constitution are some of the finest documents ever created. Slight changes have been made over the more than two centuries that we've been a country, but for anyone to create single documents that would govern an enormous country for centuries at all is impressive.
As a journalist, I take special interest in the first amendment and being a part of what is the fourth estate. We make an absolute mess of things sometimes and the rise of entertainment, gossip and tabloid journalism and the internet has certainly changed things for us. But as there will always be a need and a place for true statesmen like Washington, Jefferson, Adam, Madison, Lincoln, there will always be a place for true journalism. For providing truth, context and raising the national debate, there will always be a need.
That's why I love the Fourth of July. I remember where the extraordinary men who created this country and who believed in a free press as a matter of national importance. It inspires me and asks us all to aspire to greatness.
